Condensed Structure
The condensed structure shows a condensed version of the structural formula. How to draw a condensed structure of a molecule:
1. List all the C’s and place a line between each one. Pentane: C – C – C – C – C
2. Attach an H to each C
CH – CH – CH – CH – CH
3. Find the number of H atoms attached to each C and add that number as a subscript to the ‘H’ that goes with that ‘C’.
CH3 – CH2 – CH2 – CH2 – CH3
(There are 3 H atoms attached to the first C, 2 H atoms attached to the second C, 2 H atoms attached to the third C, 2 H atoms attached to the fourth C, and 3 H atoms attached to the fifth C.)
The condensed structure is the condensed structure of the molecule.
