   How to Name an Ether
  1. Write the name of the hydrocarbon for the C’s before the O. 2. Write the name of the hydrocarbon for the C’s after the O. 3. Add the word ether to the end.
Name this ether.
     H H H H H HCCOCCCH
     1. The hydrocarbon before the O is ethyl.
How do we know that? Ethane has 2 C’s
and 6 H’s ( Reffy, Tables P and Q). Since this molecule has one less H molecule (5 H’s), this is ethyl.
             HH HHH HH HHH HCCOCCCH
HH HHH
                     2. The hydrocarbon after the O is propyl.
How do we know that? Propane has 3 C’s and 8 H’s (
Tables P and Q). Since this molecule has one less H molecule (7 H’s), this is propyl.
3. Answer: Ethyl propyl ether
 Reffy,
ethyl ether propyl
