If the hydrocarbons before and after the ‘O’ are the same, just write di____ ether
This is dimethyl ether.

The hydrocarbon before the O is methyl. The hydrocarbon after the O is also methyl. Instead of writing methyl methyl ether, we write dimethyl ether.
