What about Therapy?
More and more studies are showing that some form of psychotherapy in coordination with anti- depressant medication can cure or at least help combat the symptoms of depression. Don’t let the word PSYCHOtherapy scare you. It is often referred to as “Talk-Therapy” and is just the general term for talking about your symptoms with a mental health professional.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy focused on teaching clients how to change their thinking and behavior. It is focused on interpreting how we react to a situation rather than the situation itself. (8) The main goal of CBT is to help patients change their way of thinking and their behaviors that will ultimately lead to a happier mood. This includes:
being able to adjust to a crisis
identify negative behaviors and be able
to replace them with positive ones
develop positive interactions with those around you
set realistic life goals
regain a sense of satisfaction and control in life as to help ease depression symptoms. (9)
A recent meta-analysis and systematic review of over 20 studies determined that CBT significantly improves depression scores and symptoms in both short-term and long-term follow-up visits. The study also concluded that in-home and telephone-based therapy exhibited significant reductions scores and symptoms. (10)
