DURATION OF CONTRACTIONS
QUALITY
TRUE LABOR (cervix dialates)
Usually a regular pattern. Contractions become longer, stronger, and closer.
Usually 45-90 seconds.
Entire abdomen tightens.
FALSE LABOR (cervix does not dilate)
Irregular pattern. Intensity varies — does not get progressively stronger.
Usually 30-45 seconds.
Only a portion or lower abdomen will tighten
