New procedures offered at Ephraim
McDowell Regional Medical Center
phraim McDowell Regional Medical Center is committed to offering patients the most advanced medical care
available. The Regional Medical Center continues to lead the state in pioneering treatments for Peripheral
EArtery Disease (PAD). In addition, the Regional Medical Center is now offering patients a groundbreaking
treatment to prevent esophageal cancer and a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate.
Pantheris System
The Regional Medical Center continues to advance the
treatments available for patients with Peripheral Artery
Disease (PAD), a common circulatory problem caused by
a build-up of plaque in the arteries that blocks blood flow
to the legs and feet. Without proper treatment, PAD can
lead to bypass surgery or amputation.
Earlier this year, the Regional Medical Center became the
first hospital in Kentucky, and third hospital in the nation,
to acquire and use the Pantheris lumivascular atherectomy
system. The new technology allows physicians to precisely
remove plaque while avoiding injury to normal arterial
wall structures. During the minimally-invasive treatment,
the lumivascular technology allows physicians to see
from inside the artery during a directional atherectomy
procedure by using imaging called optical coherence
tomography (OCT).
