JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE BEACH WITH THE KODIAK
Tucked into a remote stretch of Washington’s coast is a legal landing strip right on the beach. It is the only beach runway in the lower 48. We made our approach over sea stacks beyond the waves and landed between two streams flowing down from the Olympic Mountains.
There was nothing in either direction — just miles of pristine Pacific Ocean coastline, driftwood and towering peaks to the Northeast. This stretch of beach, marked only with a tattered windsock, is Copalis State Airport. Airport is a bit of an exaggeration, but if you’re looking for razor clams or a place to fly a kite, this is it.
