This photo, included in Jürgen Stroop’s report to Heinrich Himmler in May 1943, has become one of the best-known photographs of World War II. The original German caption read: “Forcibly pulled out of dug-outs.” The Warsaw Ghetto was aggressively cleared following the heroic Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which lasted from April 19 to May 16, 1943. Conditions in the ghettos were extremely harsh and many died of disease, starvation, or were executed. All ghettos were eventually cleared, with the remaining Jews deported to concentration and extermination camps.
