On their arrival in Auschwitz-Birkenau, women and children from the deportation trains, as yet unaware of their fate, were lined up to face a selection process. Adults considered “fit for work” were sent for slave labor. The rest – the elderly and the children – were almost always sent immediately to their deaths in the gas chambers.
