Show your work. Try to get a “system” down as your process.
1. A football is thrown at a velocity of 55 feet/second and an angle of 60° with the
horizontal. (Admittedly, I have no idea of the feasibility of that statement.) Find the
horizontal and vertical components that represent the velocity.
2. An airplane is traveling at a speed of 420 mph with a bearing of N40 W at a fixed altitude.
o
It encounters a wind blowing with a velocity of 50 mph in the direction of N20 E. What is
o
the resultant speed and direction of the plane?
3. A boat travels 30 mph due west. If there is a 7 mph current at N 30⁰ W, find the actual
speed and direction (in standard bearing format) of the boat.
4. An airplane’s velocity with no wind is 580 km/h with a bearing of 60⁰. The wind at the
altitude of the plane has a velocity of 60 km/h and is blowing from the northwest. What is
the true speed and bearing (using azimuth bearings) of the plane?
5. An airplane is flying in the direction 15° North of East at 550 mph. A wind is blowing in
the direction 15° South of East at 45 mph.
a) Find the component form of the velocity of the airplane and the wind.
b) Find the actual speed ("ground speed") and direction of the airplane.
6. The SS Harvey is sailing on the ocean at 20 knots at a bearing of S 35 W. According to
the local meteorologist, the wind is hitting the boat at 8 knots at a bearing of S 10 E. In
addition, the water has a current of 5 knots at a bearing of N 85 E. Find the actual speed
and direction (in standard bearing format) of the boat.
