Figure 6-66B–F. Make the first half turn perfectly horizontal. You’ll need to angle the second half turn
upward to clear the start, but that’s good. Apply tight turns, stretching the wire across the flat faces,
easing up a bit at the rounded sides (B). After completing the round turns, angle the lead back down to
begin riding turns (C). The last riding turn should cleanly cover the first round turn. Begin frapping turns
by poking a hole with an awl or small spike just as close to the bottom of the seizing as you can get. Don’t
snag anything with the awl. Pass the end through the hole, being careful not to lose any slack, and snap
it into place, being careful not to lose any fingers (D). Poke a hole at the top of the seizing and pass the
end through this, then back through the first hole. Snap the turn into place (E). Heave the first frapping
turn taut with your Mallet de Mer (see Figure 6-56F). A bit of tallow or shortening applied under the turn
at its top left and bottom right corners (as seen in the drawing) will help the wire slide around. “Massage”
the slack toward the mallet with a marlingspike (F).
