Study on Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks
1. Cost of CSEB bricks
Surface Volume of CSEB brick, cu.m=0.005
Total number of brick in 1 cu.m=200 bricks
Total cost of the bricks in 1 Cu.m=200x12.35=Nu. 2470
2. Cost of 1 Cubic meter of Red Bricks
Size of the brick= 200x100x100
Volume of the bricks= 0.002 cu.m
Total number of bricks in 1 cubic meter= 500 Red bricks
Total cost of the bricks in 1 cubic meter= Nu.7,085
Note: Cost of buying CSEB machine is not considered as the machine itself will pay itself
back by hiring out.
From the above cost comparison, it is clear that manufacturing CSEB at site is way cheaper
than importing the Red bricks and regarding the construction cost, the studies carried out by
Auroville in march 2004 found that a finished m of CSEB masonry is always cheaper than
3
fired bricks: 19.4% less than country fired bricks and 47.2 % less than wire cut bricks.
Obviously,
Furthermore, the study carried out by the Ministry in 2015 showed that the Earthen buildings
have low thermal conductivity (1 to 1.2 W/m K). In addition, [12] noted that the addition of
2
cement and sand content can decrease slightly the conductivity of the brick. The advantage
of low thermal conductivity material, is energy efficiency due to reduction of heating
demand in winter and cooling demand in summer.
