Module 4: Writing with Fluency and Control Teacher’s Guide.
Objective: Correct joining of a Harriet the Cow letter to another Harriet the Cow letter
  Lesson plan:
In small groups, seated at a table each child has a Write and Wipe Board and a suitable pen. The teacher has the illustrated cow letter cards with the letter f removed.
1. Shuffle the cards and place them face down in a fan shape.
2. Ask two children to pick one letter card each. These are the two Harriet the Cow
letters the group will learn to join, e.g. t and h.
3. On your Write and Wipe Board demonstrate how to form and join the letters t to
h.Remind the children that their pens should always touch the board, only lifting to
cross the tafter writing both letters.
4. The children then have a go at writing on their Write and Wipe Boards.
5. Ask a new pair of children to pick two letter cards. Continue in this way until all the
letters are covered.
6. Holding up the f letter card explain that unlike the other 5 Harriet the Cow letters
this letter comes back up to the grass after it has gone looking for worms.
7. Demonstrate by drawing an land an f. Verbalise this difference as you form the
letters.
8. Reshuffle the illustrated Harriet the Cow letter cards and place them face down.
The letters now selected should be joined to the letter f.
More to Learn:
Key phonetic combinations for this category are: th, thr, bl and fl.
To supplement the learning use the preprinted practice page in the appendix, page 33.
If the group has good letter formations they can attempt to join more than two Harriet the cow letters in one turn.
Support:
Use hand over hand activities to help those that find motor planning more difficult. Have these children write on a vertical surface like the whiteboard.
