Module 4: Writing with Fluency and Control Teacher’s Guide.
Objective: Correct joining of a Harriet the Cow letter to a short Rupert the White Sheep letter
Lesson plan:
In small groups, seated at a table each child has a Write and Wipe Board and a suitable pen. The teacher holds the illustrated Rupert the White Sheep letter cards and Harriet the Cow letter cards.
1. Shuffle Rupert the White Sheep cards and place the cards face up in a fan shape. 2. Ask the children which letter leads out at the helicopter line and not the grass line.
If needed ask them to write in turn on their Write and Wipe Boards. If they still need help, write the letter r on a board, and without lifting your pen ask “on what line have I finished?”
3. Explain that the letter r is one of four special letters that have a dip join.
This means that they join to another letter, at the helicopter line not the grass line.
4. Keeping the two card sets separate, lay the Harriet the Cow and Rupert the White
Sheep letters cards face down.
5. Ask two children to pick and turn over one card from each set, so they have two
letters to join, e.g. t to i.
6. Demonstrate on your Write and Wipe Board joining the t to i. Remind the children
their pens should always touch the board, only lifting to dot the iafter all the writing
is finished.
7. The children then have a go at writing tand i on their Write and Wipe Boards.
8. Ask two new children to pick a card and repeat the process above until all the Harriet
the Cow and Rupert the White Sheep letters are covered.
More to Learn:
Key phonetic combinations for this category are: ti, kn, tr, br.
To supplement the learning use the preprinted practice page in the appendix, on page 34.
If the group has good letter formations they can attempt to join more than two Harriet the Cow and Rupert the White Sheep letters in one turn.
Support:
Use hand over hand activities to help those that find motor planning more difficult. Have the children write on a vertical surface like the Whiteboard.
Ask the children if they can think of the other 3 dip joining letters. Answer – o v and w.
