P. 13
Objective: Cutting along a straight line
Module 2: Getting Ready for Writing Teacher’s Guide.
Lesson Plan:
Learning to hold and handle scissors, whilst coordinating the continuous cutting action to cut along a line.
1. On a table provide the children with a copy of page 44 from the Activities Manual or off page IWB202 from the IWB programme and a selection of different scissors, including left and right hand scissors.
2. Demonstrate to the children how to hold and support the scissors in one hand, whilst holding the card in the other hand.
3. Demonstrate the action of cutting along the line and stopping at the dot.
4. The children can then complete the worksheet independently.
More to Learn:
1. Observe the positioning of the body,
especially the elbows. If a child cuts with the ‘elbows up’ and sticking out to the side, away from the body, this is an inefficient movement pattern. Encourage children to bring their elbows into their sides, and bring their hands forward across their body.
2. Encourage children to cut at the deepest point of the blades, not using the tip of the scissors.
Support:
You can help the children by photocopying the image to be cut out onto card. This keeps the page more rigid and assists with coordination. Use adapted scissors, or give hand over hand support so the children can feel the right movement pattern.
