Module 2: Getting Ready for Writing Teacher’s Guide.
Objective: Cutting along a curved line
Lesson Plan:
Learning to hold and handle scissors, whilst coordinating the continuous cutting action of cutting along curved lines.
1. On a table, provide the children with a copy of page 45 and 46 from the Activities Manual or off page IWB203/206 from the IWB programme and a selection of different scissors, including left and right hand scissors.
2. Demonstrate to the children how to hold and support the scissors in one hand, whilst holding the paper in the other hand.
3. Demonstrate the action of cutting along the dotted line and stopping at the corner and changing direction.
4. The children can then complete the worksheet independently.
More to Learn:
1. As the children learn to move the paper
whilst cutting, the action begins to move into a ‘bilateral activity’ the need to control the two sides of the body differently, at the same time. The activity becomes neurologically more challenging.
2. As the children progress in their cutting skills, the accuracy may falter whilst they physically adjust and integrate their hand movements to adjust the paper.
Support:
You can help the children by photocopying the image to be cut out onto card. This keeps the page more rigid and assists with coordination. Use adapted scissors or hand over hand support, so the children can feel the right movement pattern.
