Objective: Cutting out a circle - solid line
Module 2: Getting Ready for Writing Teacher’s Guide.
Lesson Plan:
Learning to hold and handle scissors, whilst coordinating the cutting action to cut out a circle.
1. On a table provide the children with a copy of page 52 and 53 from the Activities Manual or off page IWB204 from the IWB programme and a selection of different scissors, including left and right hand scissors.
2. Demonstrate to the children how to hold and support the scissors in one hand, whilst holding the paper in the other hand.
3. Demonstrate the action of cutting along the dotted line and stopping at the corner and changing direction.
4. The children can then complete the worksheet independently.
More to Learn:
1. Cutting circles requires consistency in
the ability of the children to adjust and adapt to the position of the paper and their hands, as well as in their cutting skills, which are no longer in straight lines.
2. Encourage the children to cut at the deepest point of the blades, not using the tip of the scissors.
Support:
Use different sized circles to challenge coordination and accuracy. Start by using larger circles and then gradually reduce the size. Monitor the inefficient ‘elbows up’ position and correct as necessary.
