Objective: Colouring in large spaces staying in the boundaries
Lesson Plan:
Learning to colour in shapes, paying visual attention to the boundaries of the shape, then controlling the force and extent of the movements in the hand.
1. On a table provide the children with a copy of page 36 - 43 from the Activities Manual or off page IWB211/218 from the IWB programme and a selection of colouring tools.
2. Explain to the children that the black line is the edge of the picture and you want them to colour inside the lines.
3. The children can then complete the worksheet independently.
More to Learn:
1. Young children are very visual, having a
completed worksheet will help the children
to understand what is expected of them. 2. Young children need large open spaces to
colour. Smaller boundaries and detail in the picture can increase as the children improve their control for fine motor skills.
Support:
Things to encourage when the children are colouring:
1. Changing colour.
2. Making larger or smaller controlled strokes
and to move from scribbling to colouring. 3. Making the direction of the colouring
horizontal or vertical.
4. Positioning the paper and crayons to
encourage an understanding of the vertical midline of the body. The paper is positioned in line with the midline in the body, slightly
slanted to the left for a right handed child and to the right for a left handed child.
To add resistance and increase the sensory awareness to the outside edge of the shape, add a line of glue, so the children can feel the edge and know when to stop.
