Senior Serenade brings music, comfort and
sense of community to local seniors.
Serenade: A piece of music played in the open air.
It was perfect weather for open doors and windows on September 15. For
Plymouth seniors living in local housing communities, it was a day of connections:
to one another and to something many have been craving—live music provided
by the Phil.
The Senior Serenade was part of a larger commemoration, a day recognized by the
town of Plymouth as Senior Appreciation Day.
Plymouth’s Center for Active Living, the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce,
BID-Plymouth hospital and the Plymouth Philharmonic joined to create this
special day to combat the isolation affecting so many, but in a particular way the
older members of the community.
Festivities included a car parade with seniors invited to “drive-through” the center,
chamber and hospital to pick up gifts of masks, lanyards, treats and raffles. Later
in the day, the Phil’s brass quintet presented Senior Serenade, a reimagined version
of their popular Lunch and Listen series.
Pre-pandemic, the program brought small ensembles into local housing
communities in much the same way. In collaboration with Plymouth’s Center
for Active Living and Old Colony Elder Services, the Phil provides luncheon for
residents while a small ensemble performs; the program is fully funded by an
anonymous donor. Musicians provide anecdotes and listening points to create a
