ORIGIN OF THE POLAR EXPRESS STORY
The idea for The Polar Express came to author Chris Van Allsburg like a
memory. He envisioned a young boy who hears a strange sound in the
night. Stepping outside, the boy finds himself in a dense fog, wandering
through the woods until he encounters a train, standing still, shrouded
in mist. Van Allsburg asked himself: Where would this train go? Where
would a child wish to go more than anywhere else on a cold, wintry
night? Suddenly, it became clear—the train was headed to the North
Pole.
From that vision, a Christmas classic was born. Although written for
children, The Polar Express resonates with readers of all ages. Perhaps
it’s because the story so beautifully captures the universal longing to
believe in a world where magic is real. During the holiday season, more
than any other time of year, that sense of wonder feels within reach.
