The Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra (the Phil) is a premier non-profit
cultural institution in Massachusetts. Dedicated to artistic excellence and
community enrichment, the Phil offers world-class performances, innovative
outreach programs, and strong community partnerships. The Phil’s mission
is to inspire, engage, and entertain through the power of live music. The
Phil plays to critical acclaim, premieres pieces from leading composers, and
performs with world-renowned soloists.
The orchestra is comprised of professionally-trained musicians who come
from diverse academic backgrounds, a variety of countries, and who bring
a world-class level of precision, skill, and dedication.
The Phil is a major cultural force in southeastern Massachusetts. Beyond the
concert season, the Phil presents a wide range of live music and educational
programs to people of all ages and backgrounds. Working with educators,
leaders, and community partners, the Phil reaches well beyond Plymouth,
serving as an innovator and advocate for music for all.
Now in its 109th Season, the Phil played its first concert on December
28, 1913, under the organization and imagination of G. Herbert Clarke, a
Kingston violin teacher with a passion for music and a vision of shared
musical fellowship and community. With the exception of two years during
World War II, the orchestra has been in continuous operation since 1913.
In 1973 the orchestra became a chartered, non-profit corporation and
experienced a period of significant growth in both programming and
support.
