AP Expectations

So now what? You signed up and you’re taking an AP class, what is the next step?

All Advanced Placement courses demand more than just the bare minimum. However, “the only
thing to fear is fear itself.” Do not worry, All AP teachers will be with you every step of the way
to provide resources and tools to further develop your skills in the classroom, which will,
translated in developing your overall character as a Collins Hill graduate.

Courses will require commitment outside of the classroom to ensure adequate success in the
classroom that will translate into the AP Exam. There will be an opportunity to gain college
credit through the AP exam which is administered in May.
Please review the course offering and select the courses in which you would like to be enrolled.
One must complete the AP Contract which will be available in the curriculum office, counseling
office and on the Collins Hill Website-Advanced Placement Courses.

               The Investment

                   ● Create short term and long-term goals to ensure success around time management and
understanding of expectations. Make 6 month plans as well as annual goals as
                       checkpoints
                   ● While “A’s” in A.P. courses are weighed on the GCPS transcript, they are not weighted
when calculating eligibility for the HOPE Scholarship. Please ensure you know how these
                       numbers are determined.
                   ● Some courses may require a prerequisite and/or an application, such as Seminar with
the expectation of completing an A.P course during their freshman year and earning a
                       4.0 GPA.
                   ● Please ensure that you have spoken with your student to understand the demand and
rigor of AP courses as workload and specific time demands are needed to pursue A.P.
                       courses.
