AP Chemistry
Description: AP chemistry course provides students with a college level foundation to support
future advanced coursework in chemistry. Students cultivate their understanding of chemistry
through inquiry based investigations as they explore topics such as atomic structure,
intermolecular forces and bonding, chemical reactions, kinetics, thermodynamics, and
equilibrium.
Skills for Success: Students should have strong algebra, problem-solving, and reading skills, and
the ability to adapt and learn in different ways. In addition students should possess a strong
work ethic due to the pace and rigor of the course.
Academic Suitability: Students should have successfully completed a gifted /honors chemistry
course and gifted /honors algebra II.
Out of Class Commitments: Students should expect to spend approximately 5 hours per week
outside of class. Homework is assigned nightly; it includes reading, watching videos,
simulations, textbook problems, and practice AP questions. Students are encouraged to
maintain a lab notebook in which they will complete pre lab assignments, data analysis, and
post lab questions.
Summer Work: The summer assignment is designed to keep chemistry skills fresh. It will take
3-4 hours to complete.
