Basket hitch with a handle:
                                   The surgeon’s knot spreads
                                   more surface contact onto
                                   an object but does not
                                   constrict the object. As a
result, it is a more durable
option for the sling and the
                                   object, and it can eliminate
                                   the possibility of a triaxial
                                   load on the carabiner.

             Surgeon’s Knot
On some objects, like trees, a basketed sling can
slide down the object, which can be abrasive or alter
the way the object is meant to be loaded. In these
instances, a surgeon’s knot is a less destructive way to
attach a sling or cordellette to an object. It adds fric-
tion and stickiness to help keep the sling in place and
             loaded in the desired fashion.
             Girth Hitch
The girth hitch is one of the most commonly used
methods for attaching a sling or cordellette to an

A girth hitch constricts the object it is hitched to. It
thereby reduces material strength and should be used
carefully and selectively. Keep it open and less binding
             as pictured.
