Welcome
A very warm welcome to all our new and returning students! We are so looking forward to starting
this new academic year with you, and to playing our part in making your university experience an
unforgettable one.
At Janet Clarke Hall we pride ourselves on our distinctive heritage and rich collegiate life. As the
first university college in Australia (and one of the first in the world) to admit women into residence
back in 1886, we are rightly proud of our foundations in the feminist and Anglican traditions.
Today, we are a friendly, diverse, and inclusive co-ed community with a wealth of opportunities
for you to develop and flourish academically, personally, and socially. JCH is a place where you
can be your authentic self, make lasting friendships, and feel a sense of home and deep
belonging. We hope you will feel inspired to try new things, to step outside of your comfort zone,
and to challenge yourself during your time with us.
As a member of the College, you have been selected for your strength of character, your ability
to contribute to the life of this community, and your potential for future leadership. University
education and College residency are an extraordinary opportunity, and we sincerely hope you
will go on to use all that you learn at JCH to make a positive change in our world. In our
community you can expect to be treated as an adult, with both privileges and responsibilities. In
return, we know that you will treat one another, the staff, and our heritage building with respect
and care.
This Handbook is designed to help you to become familiar with student life at JCH. It outlines our
history and the values which shape our culture, and provides practical information about living in
this community and the policies and procedures that guide us in our shared life here. Staff and
returning students live alongside you, and will help you to understand life at the College. If you
have any questions or wish to discuss an aspect of College life, we are here to help you and to
offer support.
On behalf of our whole College family – staff, Tutors, other students, and our large and engaged
alumni community – congratulations on becoming a member of JCH. It is my hope that 2024 will
be a wonderful year of discovery, learning, and friendship for you, and I am excited to see you
make the most of all the opportunities before you.
Warmest wishes,
Dr Eleanor Spencer-Regan
Principal, Janet Clarke Hall
