Our Structure
Junior Common Room (JCR) and Senior Common Room (SCR) – two rooms, one purpose
All undergraduate students are members of the JCR, which is the backbone of student life and
College culture. All graduate students, partners of resident staff, and staff are members of the
SCR. The SCR will engage every day with the JCR, and provide the framework around which the
academic, pastoral, and some social aspects of College life are built. We couldn’t be a real
college without each other.
College Leadership and Governance
Janet Clarke Hall is governed by a Council which appoints the Principal. The Principal works
closely with members of Council to develop strategic planning and oversee and represent the
College to its stakeholders. The Deputy Principal is responsible for the day-to-day running of the
College, working closely with the Principal in all aspects of College life and holds delegated
responsibility in their absence. The Business Manager and the Dean of Studies complete the senior
leadership team. All members of the team work closely with the Council and its committees.
The Student Club
The President of the Student Club (Senior
Student) is responsible to its members – all
students enrolled in the College, and will
delegate to the Vice-President when absent.
Two Student Observers (Della Knight and Amy
Wortmann in 2024) serve on Council and
provide a conduit back to the Student Club.
The Anglican Church
Janet Clarke Hall is a College in the Anglican tradition, and shares its chapel with the other
Anglican college, Trinity College. The Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne, the Most Reverend Dr
Philip Freier is the President of Janet Clarke Hall, and maintains an interest in the life of the College.
The Chaplain of Trinity College, Reverend Dr Luke Hopkins, is an honorary member of our Senior
Common Room, and warmly welcomes students who are interested in exploring any aspect of
their spirituality through the Chapel, both formally or informally. Apart from Chapel, the values of
the College are deeply informed by the best elements of the Anglican tradition – a generous
acceptance and celebration of difference, an openness to explore questions of substance, and
the importance of a place to ponder who you are and how you fit into the bigger picture.
