                   LECTURE NOTES

                   A. Matter, Elements, and Atoms
                       1. Matter
Matter is anything that occupies space and has weight

                          a. States of matter
                              i. Solid
                              ii. Liquid
                              iii.Gas

                          b. Matter undergoes changes
                              i. Physical change
Chewing food is an example of a physical change in which the
food is the same; there are just smaller pieces
                              ii. Chemical change
When food is digested by enzymes, the chemical structure of the
                                 food is changed.

                       2. Elements
                          a. Most abundant elements C,H.O,N

                          b. Trace elements.- Trace elements are elements that are found
in the body in tiny amounts; they are essential for the health of
the body (e.g., copper, selenium, zinc).
