2.3.1 THE IMPORTANCE OF ON-BOARD SHOPPING
Our findings regarding the high additional spend generated by the on-board Duty & Tax Free stores is further supported by 53% of travellers considering the on-board offering to be ‘very important’ to their overall cruise. In addition, just 15% of cruise passengers in the North American & Caribbean region consider the offering unimportant, suggesting an wide openness to the offer.
Our evidence suggests that on-board Duty and Tax Free Retail is particularly important to younger passengers with 75% aged 40 or under rating Duty / Tax Free Retail availability as ‘very important’.
Many older travellers may feel that Duty / Tax Free stores on-board are not currently meeting their expectations or, given the propensity to go on multiple cruises, they may feel that they have seen it all before, highlighting the necessity to keep the retail offer fresh with new products, limited editions and differentiated, location based offerings.
