Industry Insider:
Asian Cruise Traveller Duty & Tax Free Retail
7 NON DUTY / TAX FREE STORE USAGE
In addition to Duty / Tax Free offerings, Asian cruise travellers are also provided with opportunities to purchase non Duty / Tax Free items from retail outlets such as convenience stores. Although some product cross-overs are apparent, these stores generally provide travellers with items such as newspapers and magazines, toiletries, and snacks for immediate consumption
7.1 RECALL, USAGE AND PURCHASING
Our research shows that non-Duty / Tax Free stores reach just less than half of Asian cruise travellers; a relatively low level of awareness compared to on-board Duty / Tax Free stores.
This is likely to be driven by a combination of convenience stores generally being much smaller than Duty / Tax Free outlets, and greater emphasis often being placed on Duty / Tax Free luxury shopping, thus causing shoppers to miss the offering.
In addition, due to the nature of convenience stores, awareness could be driven by travellers identifying a need for an exact product, i.e. a traveller identifies a need for a newspaper, and actively seeks out a convenience store to make that purchase; thus also explaining high browsing and purchasing rates among those aware of the service.
This being said, the very high rate of purchasing among those aware of the service does present an opportunity for cruise liners to increase revenue through the channel via increasing awareness.
