3 THE ASIAN CRUISE TRAVELLER
Our research indicates that, in general terms, the Asian cruise traveller embarks on shorter duration cruises within the Asian region, with key departure destinations including China, Singapore and Taiwan, and leading call locations including China, Japan, and South Korea.
However, looking forward our research shows that a trend towards longer duration cruises outside the Asian region may be developing among Asian cruise passengers.
As we will outline in this section, whilst not the leading driver for taking a cruise among Asian travellers, a wide range of on-board facilities are key to traveller satisfaction, with on-board shopping being a particularly important aspect, especially among Chinese passengers.
3.1 ASIAN CRUISE TRAVELLER TENDENCIES
3.1.1 CRUISE DURATION
Shorter cruises dominate passenger traffic among Asian cruise travellers, with 61% of travellers in our sample having embarked on either a sea cruise of 2 - 3 nights or a cruise with a duration of 4 – 6 nights most recently.
Shorter cruises are more popular for several reasons including workers being very committed to the workplace and often having limited holiday entitlement. In addition older generations are heavily committed to watching over grandchildren.
However, our sample does illustrate a slightly higher incidence of Asian travellers taking longer cruises than previous research conducted, indicating that longer cruises could be more popular going forward.
This is driven by Chinese travellers, with a relatively high proportion having embarked on a 7-13 night long cruise most recently.
