3.1.2.1 SEA CRUISE DEPARTURES
On a nationality basis, the majority of Asian cruise travellers depart from their country of residence, although our research shows that a relatively high proportion originate from a different regional location:
Chinese (Mainland): 76% depart from a mainland Chinese port, mainly Shanghai, with much of the remaining departing from Hong Kong (13%).
Chinese (Hong Kong): Just 43% depart from Hong Kong with other key departure destinations including Japan, Mainland China, and Singapore.
Singaporean: 62% depart from Singapore with 18% departing from Malaysia (mainly Penang and Kuala Lumpur). 5% of Singaporean traffic also originates from Indonesia.
Taiwanese: 64% of Taiwanese sea cruise passengers depart from Taiwanese ports, mainly Keelung and Kaohsiung. Other key departure destinations include Japan and China.
Therefore, travellers may have been exposed to a Duty / Tax Free offering prior to arrival at a cruise port. Consequently, port and on-board retailers should differentiate their offering from other Travel Retail channels to provide a point of difference and generate interest. Drive this through cruise only exclusive and limited edition products and unique promotional activity.
