3.2.3 FUTURE CRUISE LIKELIHOOD
Repeat cruising is a very prominent trend among Asian travellers, with almost 9 in 10 planning to take a recreation sea cruise of two nights or more within the next 12 months. However, the extent to which on- board facilities are key in driving this is illustrated by one traveller explaining that they do not intend to cruise in the future unless “relevant facilities, quality and services have improved”.
Figure 5: Future Cruise Likelihood
Near-term future cruising likelihood most prominent among Mainland Chinese travellers followed by Singaporeans
A slightly lower incidence of short Cruises exists, suggests a shift towards longer services
In the next 2 years 10%
In the next 5 years 1%
In the next 12 months 41%
Will not go on another 3%
In the next 6 months 45%
In terms of future cruise duration, a similar trend exists to previous cruise behaviour; 49% intend to take a medium cruise, followed by 30% looking to take a long cruise. A slightly lower incidence of short cruises exists (15%) potentially suggesting a slight shift towards longer duration services among Asian passengers.
A larger shift is apparent among future cruise locations with just 64% of respondents looking to remain in the Asian region. This suggests that having tested cruising within the Asian region, travellers are now looking to services further afield.
Asian travellers are now looking to regions external to Asia, particularly Europe, the Caribbean and North America
