Industry Insider:
European Cruise Duty & Tax Free Retail 2016
3.2.1 ALTERNATIVE DUTY & TAX FREE SHOPPING
Just over half of European cruise travellers travel internationally either to get to their departure cruise port or once their cruise has finished.
Of those travelling internationally, the majority (72%) recall seeing opportunities to purchase Duty & Tax Free items during this stage of their trip. Furthermore, 41% of those travelling internationally go on to make a purchase with 46% of buyers purchasing before their cruise, 38% purchasing after their cruise and 16% purchasing both before and after their cruise.
Purchasing Duty & Tax Free items when travelling internationally is significantly more prominent among Italians and younger travellers and is also more prominent among females, potentially due to Beauty being the most purchased from category. Those travelling internationally to a North European / Nordic cruise are also more likely to make a purchase if made aware of Duty & Tax Free purchasing opportunities.
It is clear from these findings that among those travelling internationally the European cruise channel is in direct competition with other Travel Retail channels. The offer provided by cruise operators and on-land port stores must therefore represent something different from the wider Travel Retail offer in order to differentiate, drive channel interest and avoid travellers considering the cruise channel to be a replication of the offer they have potentially already experienced during their trip.
