some people's standards but mama always found a way to feed anyone who visited from out of town and to pack a bag of food for them to "eat on the way home."
She always invited out of town visitors to "stay the night." Many times we made pallets on the floor for our overnight guests. That was a time when there was plenty to eat and for Christmas we got store bought presents and homemade - in that cast iron skillet - divinity and chocolate fudge candy with wal- nuts. We were "living right high on the hog."
Life was good and it got even better. All us Okie kids turned out pretty good and our kids and grand kids turned out even better.
For years we all, kids and grandkids,
Recycling award
The Sanger chamber of commerce has an awards banquet each spring. At this event citizens and organizations who have made positive contributions to the City of Sanger are recognized. One award is for "Best Recycling Program."
I believe the Sanger city council deserves this honor since they just keep recycling the same old topics.
Again and again and again.
Several of these beat to death topics once again raised their ugly heads at the Dec. 6 council meeting.
First, the contract for paying the Fresno County Sheriff's Office for police dispatch came up.
Three or four years ago we beat this subject to death with one council member wanting dispatch at any cost. Captain Kent Matsuzaki gave a very thorough presentation of how much it would cost
got together at Christmas time for mama's divinity and chocolate fudge candy and the fried chicken, corn on the cob, mashed pota- toes and gravy she made for us because she knew we would be hungry - and there was always that bag of food for us to "eat on the way home."
The farm labor camp and the cold metal cabin, the little trailer houses, the teach-
ers who knew I would fail, the cold biscuits soaked in bacon grease and the bleeding fin- ger tips are now just ghosts of Christmases past. They whisper to me every new Christmas season about how lucky I am to be living high on the hog in a great town like Sanger.
to build a dispatch center and the cost
for staffing the center. And the cost was staggering! The council finally voted against going forward with dispatch center.
Simply put Sanger cannot afford it. No reason to go over this again and again. Second, a year ago we canceled the
contract with our grant-writing firm, Acquisition Partners. We then hired a
new firm with much expectations of
great things to come. In reality what
came was disappointment. And the new firm's contract has expired. The CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) applications are due very soon and here
we go again hiring Acquisition Partners (temporarily) for four months to get
this one project done. We still need to go through the process of hiring a permanent grant writing firm for the future. That's not only rehashing, but also pretty poor money management.
Last but not least, here comes medical marijuana issue again. Another out-of-town medical marijuana dealer wants to make
a presentation to our city council and I am fairly sure he wants to open a business in town.
We have had several presentations in the last few years; some pro and some
con. Most of the presenters are not Sanger citizens and yet they want to come to our town to get in on what they view as an easy money-making venture.
I am not saying there is not a place in
My Christmas wish for you is that you and yours live high on the hog even if you're not too sure what that means.
We, all of us here at the Herald, are mighty glad you let us come into your home every week to share Sanger news and some- times our private thoughts like these whis- pers from the ghosts of Christmases past.
Please stop by the Herald sometime in the new year and say hello.
We usually have hot coffee, donuts and sometimes a box of Mexican bread from Cristal bakery to share with you - and you can even take some with you in case you get hungry on the way home.
I guess we could even spread a pallet
our society for medical marijuana. But the system of regulation that is currently in place is rather a make-shift affair at best.
The City does not need to add one more thing to try to regulate and make sure everyone involved is "legit."
Every time this comes up it becomes quite a controversial topic with a lot of emotion.
Again and again.
There is an old saying, "Let sleeping dogs lie."
The above topics have been studied and discussed at great length so let's move
on. Instead of recycling old subjects that have already been decided, we should concentrate on new (less recycled) issues that will move us into a future that is decisive and positive.

on the floor, the way my mama used to for guests, if you wanted to take a nap. But we print more than 40 publications a week and our big presses are pretty noisy.
Merry Christmas and best wishes for a new year filled with good health, a warm house and plenty of divinity and chocolate fudge candy with walnuts.

The theme for the re-opening event was “reopened, refreshed, revitalized.” The Sanger FOL plans to continue its theme of “revitalization” by forming a teen council.
Teens throughoutthecommunitycan contact Teen Librarian Michele Burton at the library on Fridays and Saturdays. Let Michele know you are interested in being
a part of this exciting new group that will plan new activities for 2019. While visiting the library, post your ideas about changes or programs you would like to see by adding them to the “sharing” tree.
To “refresh” the library, a committee was formed and has begun the selection of new furnishings. The Sanger FOL meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the library meeting room. The meetings are open to the public and you can drop by to join or to learn more about the group.
We are open to new ideas and new volunteers. Come join us!

Christmas on Jensen and Academy
It would be great if all properties on the two main entrances to Sanger, Jensen and Academy avenues, would do a little Christmas season decorating with lights.
After all, this is the Nation's Christmas Tree City and a time of giving.
