Jacob Rodriguez and Vanessa Hernandez were named Dinuba High School's Winter Homecoming King and Queen at halftime of the Emperor's boys basketball game on Friday.
Rodriguez and Vanessa were two of 14 contestants up for the crowns and won by competing in a series of events throughout the school week. At Friday night's reveal, each female from the seven candidate couples were given a sealed bouquet of roses. Only one bouquet of rosee were red and the one receiving that bouquet was crowned Homecoming King and Queen.
For Rodriguez, who also plays on the school's basketball team, it was his second crowning achievement in as many weeks. On the Friday before, Jan. 25, Rodriguez was also named the 2018 Dinuba Teenage Citizen of the Year.

remains. He added that the city of Dinuba, and other concerned cities, have lobbyist who are actively fighting the bill.
Mayor Thusu also praised the city’s efforts in the way of public safety, pointing out the Dinuba Police Department’s 2018 figures that show many crimes are down in the city. And he added that the Dinuba Fire Department received a new ambulance, a donation made possible by the Alta Health Care District. The fire department also received a new roof, new firefighting breathing apparatuses and a $1.9 million reimbursement for ambulance services.
The city is maintaining its growth and capital projects are continuing throughout Dinuba. Some of those projects include the rail crossing improvements on College Avenue, the Randle Avenue extension and the repaving of the parking lot at the Dinuba Senior Center. Some projects to begin in the near future include a roundabout at Nebraska and North Alta avenues, and the repair of the decorative traffic circles in downtown Dinuba.
On top of the capital project improvements, Thusu also highlighted recent community beautification projects such as the drought tolerant landscaping project at City Hall, the refurbished downtown gateway signage and a new Dinuba Transit sign. In addition, the city added three new playgrounds to three parks; Muirfield, Nebraska and Roosevelt.
And a new neighborhood park is also in the works, as the city of Dinuba will be adding its newest community park soon in the Viscaya neighborhood. Thusu said the city has already hired an architect to prepare a design for the park and held a community outreach for design ideas, where he said the city received great input.
Rooftops in Dinuba are also expanding, as new neighborhoods are popping up across town. Housing developments will be adding over 500 new homes to Dinuba.
And 44 of those units will be coming from the old Marquis Homes development, which had sat dormant for years after the housing crash of 2008.
Thusu also mentioned new business that took root in Dinuba last year, such as Yamamori’s Restaurant on the west side of town, the Verizon and Wing Stop plaza at Alta Avenue and El Monte Way, and Rebel Fitness, which took over a portion of the old Kmart building on the east side of town.
“We are also excited about two upcoming businesses,” Thusu added.
He referred to two new business, one of which will be opening its doors this month, Orbit Lanes (formerly Dinuba Lanes) and another that is scheduled to break ground this month, the new United Health Center Medical
Clinic.
In the city’s long-term plan,
Thusu said there are two major areas of concern, one being the downtown area and the other being the east side. He said the city has strategic plans to address issues in both areas.
Part of those strategies have been compiled by reaching out to the community, something he added the city is doing better at through the use of social media.
In looking ahead, Thusu stated that one of the biggest projects up the road is working with Dinuba Unified School District as it prepares to build the new high school. The two are already working closely together as the city is currently leasing the Vocational Center to the school district. The district has also agreed to purchase the vocational center at the end of the lease.
A ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Vocational Educational Center is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
