big play and this time it resulted in a touchdown. A heads up play by Justin Gonzalez, who scooped up an errant backward pass behind the line of scrimmage, returning it 55-yards for a touchdown, resulted in the games first score.
“That’s a credit to the coaching staff because that’s exactly what happens in practice,” Scharton said. “If you don’t hear a whistle you keep playing until you hear a whistle.”
That play also ignited the offensive line who created plenty of running lanes for back Joshua Martinez. Martinez rushed for 188 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns both in the second quarter, including a 65-yard run. As a team, Dinuba finished with 254 yards on the ground.
Senior Joshua Martinez finds some running room created by the offensive line for a big gain during the second half of Dinuba’s game against Redwood. Martinez had 16 carries for 188 yards and two touchdowns as the Emperors blanked the Rangers, 35-0.

This year’s Dinuba High girl’s tennis team has the numbers with a roster of 33 players and it’s loaded with seniors, juniors and sophomores, but there are two concerns for head coach Fadra Kiehn.
The Emperors top returning top player is out and there are no freshman, yet.
“We have seven seniors on the squad and the rest of the field are juniors and sophomores,” Kein said. “Our top player is out after ACL surgery in the summer, so she’s not playing for awhile. We have quite a few returning players who were freshman a year ago.” Kein said.
Kein says that despite not having their top player the team is young with lots of potential and growth.
“It’s going to be exciting to watch,” she said.
Currently, senior Guadalupe Alvarado will be at No. 1 with sophomore Ashley Flores at No. 2, the rest of the team will be battling for the other spots.
The team is coming off a 7-2 loss to Reedley on Monday.
No. 4 singles player Karina Vieyra won her match defeating Coryenne Marnifo, 6-2, 6-2.
Dinuba’s other win was in doubles
Magdaleno to defeat Marnifo and Yessenia Segovia, 8-2.
Magdaleno was involved in one of the closest matches falling to the Pirates’ Emma Mulligan at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (8-10)

Dinuba Invitational
The Emperors, along with other teams in the area, took part in the Dinuba Invitational Saturday morning. The race took runners around and through the DHS campus before finishing up between the two gymnasiums. The two-mile course is as flat a course many runners would see.
“It’s really fast because it’s all asphalt and cement,” said coach Lucas Lichtenwaldt. “It’s really fast.”
Led by junior Jackie Delgado’s 13th place finish, the Emperors placed sixth
overall with 130 points. Delgado had a time of 12 minutes, 06.63 seconds and teammate Luz Diaz was 23rd in 12:35.35.
Sophomore Ali Ontiveros finished 27th in 12:46.71, while classmates Elizabeth Mendez and Amanda Soto were 40th and 42nd overall with times of 13:06.82 and 13:19.18.
Closing out the team’s effort was sophomore Angie Arreola who was 48th in 13:43.62.
The overall winner of the race was Lindsay’s McKaylie Caesar who finished in a time of 10:58.28. Caesar, who was ranked No. 6 heading into the race, pulled away from McFarland’s Hilda Gonzalez (10:59.60) for the win. Gonzalez was ranked No. 3 heading into the meet.
As a team, the Cougars placed first as a team with 45 points and were followed by Redwood (83), Lindsay (88), Madera (91) and Reedley (95).
“It was a really strong field,” said Lichtenwaldt. “There were some really quality squads out there. Overall, we’re really pleased.”
Lichtenwaldt said the times posted by the team were better than a year ago and ran very strong. The team may have moved up in the team standings as they were missing one of their top runners, Jasmine George, who is nursing an injury, according to Lichtenwaldt.
The DHS boys did not field an entire team at the meet, instead the Emperors were paced by senior Nicolas Amezola who was 24th in 10:36.64.
“We had some runners out for some reason or another,” said Lichtenwaldt.
Sophomore Jamie Soto finished the race in a time of 11:05.33 for 34th overall. Senior Javen Hernandez was 50th in 11:29.22.
Redwood’s Bailey Darnell, ranked No. 8 in the section, won the race cruising to an 18 second victory (9:26.10) over

The combination of a strong running game and a stingy defense played a big role as Dinuba evened its record to 1-1 after a 35-0 win over Redwood Friday evening.
The Rangers (0-1) opened the game with a time-consuming drive to the Emperors 1-yard line. That is when the defense responded, stuffing a Redwood ball carrier and Josh Sanchez managed to come up with the football, returning it to deep inside Rangers territory. The Emperors were unable to capitalize but coach Kevin Scharton said that play loomed large for his team.
“That play was huge,” he said. “Josh Sanchez is one of the guys who works really hard in practice and he watches a lot of film and it shows on Friday night when kids make plays like that.”
After a scoreless first quarter, it was the defense again coming up with a
