Noah Cortez almost made it consecutive weeks of capturing a title.
Instead, the junior standout had to settle for second place at 152 pounds after losing to Palmdale’s Troy Mantanona at the 11th Annual Battle for the Belt tournament this past weekend in Temecula Valley.
Cortez opened the tournament with an 11-0 major decision over Hunter Avila of Monache . He
then recorded a technical fall against Cole Cartwright and followed that up with another technical fall against Aethan Escamilia. Cortez continued to work his way through his bracket with a 5-1 win over Buchanan’s Reymundo Raiz and captured a 5-3 decision against Don beni Banduenga before his match against Mantanona.
At 170 pounds, Daniel Long placed sixth overall. Long won his first three matches via pins before handing David Lipscomb a 9-1 loss, but then dropped a tough 3-2 match to Mark Cardwell of Monache. Long then faced Jarad Priest of Bakersfield and suffered a close 2-1 loss.
As a team, Dinuba finished 36th overall out of 69 teams with 4o points.
Buchanan High won the team crown with 313 points well ahead of runner-up Bakersfield, who had 181.5.
Dinuba also had a few wrestlers take part in the Redwood Invitational on Saturday.
At 113 pounds, Matt Rivera lost a close 6-5 decision to Travis Sirwet but rebounded to pinn Diego Rivera of Redwood. M. Rivera then suffered a loss to Nikko Chavez of Golden West.
Members of the girls wrestling team also were in action as they traveled to Sanger for the Sanger Invitational.
Ismar Bertado won three matches at 170 and finished third overall.
At 126, Autumn Rangel went 1-1.

The Orosi High girls soccer team remained perfect this season as the Cardinals defeated Minarets on Monday, 2-0. Orosi improves to 9-0-3 overall and are 4-0 in West Sequoia League play. The Cardinals entered the match with a 1-0 win over Caruthers on Friday as sophomore Stephanie Figueroa scored the only goal in the second half. Orosi was scheduled to play Fowler (15-3, 5-0) on Wednesday before playing at Riverdale tomorrow.

The Dinuba High boys soccer team remained perfect in Central Sequoia League play with a 2-1 win over host Central Valley Christian Monday evening.
The Emperors (12-5-1) received goals from Alejandro Cueva and Juan Gutierrez and Bryan Lucatero assisted on both
scores.
On Jan. 8 in a match against
Kingsburg, Dinuba broke open a 1-1 tie with a four goal outburst in the second half that paved the way for a 5-3 win.
Santiago Rodriguez scored three goals and an assist and Angel Pineda along with Gutierrez accounted for the other two goals.
On Jan. 5, the Emperors had dropped a 1-0 match at Orosi. Just three days prior, Dinuba came out on top of a hard fought 3-2 win over Porterville.
Jorge Duran, Pineda and Rodriguez each scored a goal for Dinuba.
The Emperors will be at home tomorrow night against Hanford West.
