Dinuba’s Smith named CSL Coach of the Year

Though the Dinuba High varsity volleyball team only went 13-18 this season, it was a considerable improvement on past seasons. In fact, this year’s record was the best the team has sported in over a decade.
The biggest change to the program was the addition of first year coach Taylor Smith. Her enthusiasm on the court was evident in the improved play and sportsmanship of her players. And that difference was noted across the league as Smith was recently named the Central Sequoia League’s Volleyball Coach of the Year.
“Our league is so competitive,” said Smith. “So to be recognized as the CSL Coach of the Year was a huge surprise to me. Every coach in our league has created a quality program, and I’m just honored to be named among them.”
This year the team started the season 3-0 and down the stretch competed in some close games. The cherry on top for the Lady Emperors was a 3-2 victory over powerhouse Central Valley Christian on Oct. 12.
“I think Dinuba’s success can be attributed to the vision of unity that we started with,” said Smith. “Togetherness was key, and by working as a team, the girls were able to make Dinuba volleyball history.”
Dinuba sophomore Allyson Garcia was also recognized for her performance this season, being named to the All-League First Team.

by Orosi High freshman Melanie Davila. The 1-0 victory over the Chieftains earned them their 14th victory of the season and their third tournament championship.
Davila is part of a young Lady Cardinals team, consisting of five freshmen, five sophomores, five juniors and four seniors. She is also the team’s leading scorer with 10 goals accounted for this season, also making her the East Sierra League’s leading scorer and the second leading scorer in Div. V.
The team will be off for the winter break and return to the field on Jan. 3 for another home game against Lindsay. That game will start at 5 p.m.
On Jan. 5 the Lady Cardinals will travel to cross-town rivals Dinuba. That game will also start at 5 p.m.

Mission Oak took third place in the tournament.
In spite of the fifth place finish for the Emperors, the team is still off to a solid start. As of Tuesday, Dinuba is 9-2. Their only two losses were to Hanford earlier this month and Mission Oak last week.
“There is always room for improvement,” said Dinuba basketball coach Jeff Schofield. “But this is definitely a good start to the season.”
The Emperors are currently participating in their third tournament of the season, the Polly Wilhelmsen Invitational in Visalia. That tournament began yesterday and will last until Saturday.
Dinuba will return to play after the winter break with an away game against Madera on Jan. 9.
Their next home game will be on Jan. 19 when they host Immanuel in a league game. The matchup with the Eagles will be a test for the Emperors defense as the Eagles will bring the state’s leading scorer to the court in Nate Kendricks, who is averaging an astounding 33.6 points per game.

Perez wins Jr
College State Championship

Former Dinuba High standout and current Fresno City wrestler Isaiah Perez (left) added another title to his long list of accolades by winning the Jr. College State Championship in his weight class, 133 lbs, on Dec. 9.
The victory helped earn the Rams their second state title in a row.
Perez defeated All-American Pedro Corona of Bakersfield 8-1 to earn the title. It was the third time Perez defeated Corona this year, as he won the West Hills and Santa Ana Tournaments by beating Corona in the finals as well.
