West Nile virus mosquito cases in county include Reedley
Contributed
The Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District reports that re- ports of mosquito-borne diseases, West Nile virus (WN) and St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE), are once more increasing in Fresno County and throughout California. Also, the presence of a new, invasive
mosquito species, Aedes aegypti, has expanded into most residential neighborhoods and communities in Fresno County.
Samples of Culex mosquitoes collected from cities, communities and rural areas in Fresno County (including Reedley) have tested pos- itive for WN and SLE. There have been 21 human West Nilecases in
California reported so far this year in California, with two in Fresno County. Last year there were 600 hu- man cases of the virus in California — with 44 deaths — and 14 cases in Fresno County but no deaths.
No human cases of SLE have been reported in 2018. Last year, there were four confirmed human SLE infections in the state, none in
Fresno County, and no fatalities. West Nile virus is a disease that can be transmitted to humans and other animals through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who are infected with WN will not expe- rience any illness. Approximately 20 percent of infected individuals will have mild to moderate, flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache
and body aches. Less than 1 percent of individuals will develop serious neurologic illnesses, such as en- cephalitis or meningitis, and this neuro-invasive illness can be life threatening.

This year’s Fiesta theme is “Jump in On the Fun,” which is inspired by this year’s 50th anniversary of the Reedley Frog Jump Contest. This year’s contest will award top three places in two categories: longest single jump and long series of three jumps by frogs sup- plied to contestants..
The frog jump contest will start around 12:30 p.m., shortly after the end of the annual Fiesta Parade on Sat- urday, Oct 13, in front of the Reedley Police Department on G Street. The event wel- comes entrants of all ages. Entry fee is $1 per person, and each contestant is re- quired to name their frog.
Eddie Vasquez of E&D Barber Shop in Reedley is the only member from the original crew in the 1960s to remain active with the event. Vasquez once again will escort contestants to the middle of the jumping arena and, if need be, em-
