Anyone outside during these times should wear loose fitting, long sleeve shirts and long pants and apply insect repellent to exposed skin. Ef- fective repellents are those containing the active ingre- dients Deet, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535, as recommended by the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

These applications may, at times and under certain conditions, include the spray- ing of an ultra-low volume (ULV), aerosol insecticide fog at night in residential areas to reduce adult mosquito popu- lations. These insecticides are applied using a truck- mounted sprayer driving along surface streets.
Spraying reportedly was done in Reedley on Aug. 16 in the area of Reed and Parlier avenues.
As a precaution, residents can eliminate mosquitoes by dumping and draining all con- tainers that hold water, and by discarding containers that are not used or needed. The district asks residents to re- port unmaintained or “green” swimming pools, which are a major source of Culex mos- quitoes in residential areas.
Staff Report
A 78-year-old Reedley man diagnosed with dementia was safely returned home on Aug. 25 after going missing for more than 24 hours while walking his dog.
Pedro Galan and his black, white and brown pit bull dog, “Donnie,” were found at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 at Immanuel High School, according to the Fresno County Sher- iff’s Office. That’s about five miles from his home near East Manning and South Alta av- enues.
Galan left home sometime around 6 p.m. on Aug. 24, walking his dog to a nearby store. Galan’s dementia reportedly causes

him to lose his sense of direc- tion.
After Galan didn’t return home a few hours later, the family called law enforce- ment. The Sheriff’s search and rescue (SAR) team was deployed and began actively looking for the man, who was considered “at risk.”
Rural crash east of Orange Cove injures 2
Staff Report
A Miramonte man was hospitalized with major inju- ries on Aug. 24 after a rural crash east of Orange Cove.
The California Highway Patrol reported that Frank L. Rodriguez, 30, was driving a 1991 Toyota west on Avenue 460, east of Road 136, at about 5 p.m. when he drifted over the center line and struck a 1997 Mitsubishi driven by Charlene Perriera, 50, of Squaw Valley.
The Toyota overturned and came to rest on its left side and blocked both lanes of traffic on Avenue 460, according to the CHP. The Mitsubishi went off the road and struck a barbed-wire perimeter fence south of the roadway.
Rodriguez was transport- ed via Lifeflight helicopter to Kaweah Delta Medical Cen- ter in Visalia for treatment of his injuries. As of Aug. 27, Rodriguez was not listed as a
patient there.
The CHP said Perriera
had complaint of pain to her left leg, but refused medical
transport.
Alcohol or drugs didn’t
appear to be a factor in the crash, the CHP added.
News of the search for Galan was report- ed on social media pages, including The Ex- ponent’s Facebook page.
According to the sheriff’s office, both Galan and Donnie were in good health when found.
