It may have been the quickest meeting the Reedley City Council ever had.
In a special meeting on Aug. 22 lasting less than four minutes, the council voted 4-0 to formally ap- point current District 2 representa- tive Mary Fast to another four-year term starting in
January. Fast was the only candidate filing in her dis- trict by the Aug. 10 deadline, and would have been unopposed on the November ballot.

“The benefit of that, obviously, is that the city saves several thousands of dollars in election costs that we normally would have to pay to the county,” she said.
But Zieba said the city was dili- gent in determining if any candidate may be interested in entering the race as a write-in candidate. A vote to appoint a single candidate would prevent that opportunity.

ends Aug. 31

Voting to name the 53rd annual Reedley Fiesta’s new frog mascot ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.
The public has a final opportu- nity to vote on a one of these names for the mascot: “Buddy,” “Reed” and “Ribberto.” Those were the top three names submitted by the public and selected by the Fiesta Committee as finalists.

Zieba lauds tax measure funds
Nicole Zieba, Reedley’s city manager, said the city’s half- cent public safety sales tax passed in 2008 has made the city a safer community than it was a decade ago.

Milestone day for RC Flight Science program
ABOVE: It was a milestone day for Reedley College on Aug. 27, when the college’s Flight Sciences program had its first day of flying lessons at Fresno Yosemite International Airport. Fresh- man Jhonathan Flores was the first of 17 students in the program to fly under the guidance of instructor Emilio Rosales of JB Aeronautics. All students in the program were scheduled to get their first flying experience this week, and will do solo flights by the end of the fall semester.

Exponent office closed on Sept. 3
The business office of The Exponent will be closed on Monday, Sept. 3, in observance of Labor Day.
There will be early dead- lines this week because of ear- ly production. Classified liner ads and legal notices are due by noon on Thursday, Aug. 30. Regular and classified display ads also are due by noon on Thursday, Aug 30.
The Exponent’s office will reopen for business at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
