The Dinuba Sentinel Community Thursday, June 27, 2019 | A5 Looking back at over 100 years of the Dinuba Sentinel
June 25, 2009 – Ten years ago the front cover of the Dinuba Sentinel featured a story of a landmark building in downtown being revitalized. The building on the northeast corner of Tulare and L streets was eventually reopened as J’s Sports and Grill.
Covering the meeting was reporter Rick Curiel, now editor of the Dinuba Sentinel.
Also featured on the cover was a commentary by then editor Bob Raison regarding the growth of Dinuba as made evident by an ever-increasing police log.

June 24, 1999 – Twenty years ago the Dinuba City Council honored Vivian Martzen as Open Gate Ministries celebrated its 25th anniversary. “I am absolutely amazed what God has done through us,” Martzen said as she was recognized. Pictured with Martzen were Open Gate Executive Director Roger Neufeld and Dinuba City Mayor John de la Montanya.
June 29, 1989 – How times have changed! In 1989, the Dinuba City Council approved a 1989-90 budget of just over $12.9 million. That number pales in comparison to this year’s city budget of nearly $56 million. Part of the budget in 1989 was the expenditure of approximately $192,000 for the acquisition of the land where the Ruiz Foods plant would be built.

Fire restrictions began on Friday, June 21 in the Sequoia National Forest. During fire restrictions, the following is prohibited 5,000 ft. and below within the Sequoia National Forest, except in designated areas identified as exempt. Visit www.fs.usda. gov/sequoia/ Alerts and Notices for a list of exempt areas.
• No Campfires or charcoal fires are allowed, except, in designated campgrounds and areas listed as “Exempt Areas” in the Forest Order exhibits.
• No Smoking is permitted, except within enclosed vehicles or buildings, developed
recreation sites and other designated areas listed in the Forest Order exhibits.
• Operating an internal combustion engine off of properly designated roads or trails and welding are all strictly prohibited during the increased fire restriction period.
• Fireworks, exploding targets, tracer rounds and other incendiary ammunition or devices are not allowed in the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument at any time. This includes sparklers and so-called safe and sane fireworks. Visitors, with a valid California Campfire Permit (www.preventwildfireca. org/Campfire-Permit), may use portable stoves and lanterns with shut-off valves, using pressurized gas, liquid fuel, or propane in the general forest areas. Forest visitors must clear all flammable material five feet in all directions from their camp stove, have a shovel available, and ensure that a
responsible person attends the stove at all times when in use.
Violation of these fire restrictions is punishable by a fine of no more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization or incarceration for not more than six months, or both.
Human-caused fires can be prevented. One less spark can mean one less wildfire. Do your part to prevent wildfires. To learn more, visit www.preventwildfireca.org/one- less-spark-one-less-wildfire.
