Earlier this year the city of Dinuba enacted a new no-smoking policy at its parks and city property. The signs arrived just in time for the Cinco de Mayo festival at Rose Ann Vuich Park.
At a ceremony to reveal the signs, Daisy Lopez, director at California Health Collaborative, told the audience the the signs
will be “Reminding residents of the city’s commitment to protecting children and families from toxic tobacco that are in places where they live, work and play.”
Last year, Lopez and a group of volunteers visited city parks to clean littered tobacco products. A staggering amount, more than 3,100, of cigarette butts and cigar butts were collected within city of Dinuba parks in just two days.
Lopez said, “The results
determined there was a significant amount of tobacco use occurring in local parks, further documenting a serious public health concern and a need for protection for local families. The city of Dinuba decided to take immediate action to support the adoption of a comprehensive tobacco free parks policy.”
The new signs were posted at Rose Ann Vuich Park and will also be placed at the city's other 10-plus parks across town.
City of Dinuba Community Services Director Stephanie Hurtado told the audience, “The city believes that parents, leaders and officials involved in recreation are role models for youth and can help positively affect the lifestyle choices they make.
“It was the intent of city council to enact the ordinance to provide for the public health, safety and wellness by discouraging the inherently dangerous behavior of smoking, and tobacco use around non- tobacco users, especially children. The new ordinance prohibits smoking or smoking
inside city buildings, vehicles, recreation areas at all times.”
