said. “I love Dinuba. I go down for Raisin Day and Cinco de Mayo. Dinuba means a lot to me.”
One other thing Barba was also hoping for prior to his big day on Saturday was a key.
Said the comedian, “I honestly would like to receive the key
to the city. This just might be my chance to bring pride back to a small town that gave me a hometown.”
Seven years a couple of Barba’s friends, who are also comedians, found themselves opening for the late comedian Ralphie May. It was in seeing his friends perform that he realized his calling.
“I remember watching them and thinking, ‘I can do this’,” recalled Barba. “And so I did. Then I got picked up by George Perez and started opening for him. He told I would know when it’s time to go solo when I was funnier than him. Two years later I went on my own.”
Barba likes to use relationship jokes in his act, exploiting the humorous and sometimes disturbing realities between couples.
“The real couples are those who fought the whole way over here,” said the divorced father of four during his finals act. “And then when you got here you were holding hands like best friends.”
Saturday, Barba received third place in the finals. And though he didn’t walk away with the grand prize, Barba said he feels accomplished in having placed so high.
“Not winning has not deterred me,” said Barba. “It lit a fire and I'm looking to go bigger and harder.”
He added, "I was just really happy to make it that far, repping the small town I learned values from was truly close to my heart."
Winning the competition was Darius Bennet, who purchased
a one-way trip to Los Angeles from Detroit to pursue his dream. Anthony Krayenhagen of Modesto took second place.
Saturday’s guest comedian was Mark Curry, star of the 90’s hit comedy series Hangin with Mr. Cooper.

For the fourth year in a row, retired Dinuba Fire Chief Myles Chute was named the president of the Alta District Historical Society. He was installed at the society’s annual meeting on Sunday, Oct. 28, along with four other officers. Six society members were also named to the board of directors.
Chute, in addressing a large turn out of society members, praised the group’s efforts this year by reviewing their accomplishments.
“This year had been a wonderful year,” said Chute. “I’ve seen a lot of growth in the historical society.”
The society’s facilities, which
include the museum, patio and
white house on South K Street,
have seen a lot of use over the past
year. It has hosted such events
as an evening with local racecar
drivers, art exhibits by local artist
Jerry Chang and the late Kay
Bororian, Leadership Northern Tulare County graduation night and the Alta District Hospital staff reunion, to name a few.
“We have a wonderful facility here,” added Chute.
The next event Chute and the society are looking forward to will be the upcoming Pioneers Day.
The event, which will be held on Nov. 10, will allow primary school students to learn about the history of the place they call home. As an added bonus, the society has also put together a coloring book that students can take home with him. Chute mentioned that the society also received a thousand dollar matching grant to help with the publishing of the book.
As eventful as the past year has been for the Alta District Historical Society, one thing they would like to see more of is more attendance by the general
community.
But all in all, Chute credited
the society and its different subcommittees for another successful year.
“This is quite a close family,” Chute said about the society. “It’s different from some of the other service clubs that I’m familiar with. This is a group that just dedicates its time to do things for the youth and for the community. I just really appreciate being a part of this
