There are some miscon- ceptions about getting older you may have heard through the years so let’s take a look at a few. Re- searchers have learned you can help preserve your health and mobility as you age by continuing with healthy habits and life- style choices.
One misconception is that the older I get the less
sleep I need. Older adults and younger adults need the same amount of sleep, 7 to 9 hours a night. Get- ting the proper amount of sleep keeps you healthy and alert. A restful night of sleep can reduce your risk of falls, improve your mental well-being along with other benefits.
Another misconception is that older people will
get dementia. Developing dementia as you age is not normal. The risk of devel- oping dementia increases as we get older but it is not inevitable. Becoming for- getful is not uncommon so be sure to talk to your doctor if you have con- cerns about your memory or cognition. Forgetful- ness and memory loss can be caused by a variety of health conditions and can
SENIOR LIVING SEARCH TIPS
Consider the follow- ing tips and factors when searching for the right re- tirement, assisted living or long-term care commu- nity:
Ask relatives, friends, neighbors or doctors for recommendations to com- pile a starter list of places to visit.
Go online to expand your list of potential facili- ties. In the U.S. sites like Eldercare.acl.gov, Argen- tum.org and LeadingAge. com can provide lists of options in your area. In Canada, each province has its own retirement com- munity association. You can visit comfortlife.ca for a list of association links and accredited facilities.
When visiting a com- munity, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Chat with residents if possible as well as staff, and find out if the facility belongs to an ac-
be treated and possibly re- versed.
Some seniors believe they should be less active and avoid exercise so they don’t get injured. Stud- ies show you have more to gain by being active and a lot to lose by sitting too much. Inactivity can cause seniors to lose the ability to do things on their own. Use of a walker is bet-
credited association.
Calculate your costs carefully, and ask about any rules governing future rate increases.
Carefully research exact- ly what services the facility provides in terms of meet- ing your potential future care needs.
It’s often a good idea to consult an attorney be- fore signing a contract to ensure you are making an informed choice.
READY TO MAKE A RETIREMENT MOVE?
From reducing home upkeep tasks and expenses to addressing health, safe- ty and social concerns, to- day’s seniors cite a variety of reasons for downsizing their living spaces or re- locating to a senior living facility.
DOWNSIZING DOS
When moving to a smaller home or assisted living facility, seniors can follow these helpful starter
ter than using an electric scooter if your doctor says exercise and walking are beneficial. Electric scoot- ers have their uses but over use to avoid walking, can be detrimental.
Socialization and eat- ing a healthy diet are also beneficial for all ages and especially important for seniors to remain their best health.
tips from seniorliving.org to declutter and downsize:
Gift your goods.
Earmark and
tribute special items to loved ones before you move.
Examine your floor plan.
Studying the layout and size of your new space will help you decide what you can keep and fit.
Small stuff first.
Start with practical sup- plies like kitchen and bathroom items, saving more emotional decisions like art, heirlooms or pho- tos for later.
Yes or no?
Set up and label con- tainers for “keepers,” “donations” and “trash” only - no “maybes.”
Digitize
Consider digitizing photos, letters and the like by taking pictures or hiring a digitizing service.
Let it go.
Eliminate unnecessary duplicates like multiple kitchen tools, and consid- er how often you use any item or article of clothing before deciding to keep it.
