receives boost in Ruiz 4 Kids grant
Sentinel staff report
“Why is it important for students to make a robot? It’s just a joy,” said Cutler Elementary School teacher Teresa Langdon.
The Cutler teacher was recently awarded Ruiz-4-Kids Mini Grant for Teachers of just under $1,000 for her project ‘VEX kits for engineering and coding’.
For the project the students are asked to use the four C’s of the 21st Century: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity.
“They will have to collaborate and communicate with each other in order to develop and construct a robot that works,” explained Langdon. “They will be able to critically think and become problem solvers by exploring what will work and troubleshoot when they encounter a problem. They will have to use creativity to create their robot, rather than simply using robots that are already created.”
Langdon said that using the four C’s in her classroom is necessary for them as future working adults.
"Students have found that if they have a machine that is not working correctly, they need to reflect, go backwards, find the design error and then find a way to correct it," said Langdon. "It takes patience and perseverance to problem solve, a skill our future leaders need."
Her class began the project on Thursday, Apr. 4, and on hand to witness the robots being built was Ruiz-4-Kids Community Relations Administrator Blanca Santana.
“When you take a look at the classrooms 20 years ago compared to now, it is astonishing how much more you see robotics or elements of robotics being taught to students,” said Blanca of the project.
She added, “This shows how quickly our world is changing and how our teachers are quickly trying to incorporate this information to prepare their students for the future. We are happy to help these teachers in any way we can and are excited about Ms. Langdon’s project.”
