a strong track record of collaborative efforts among parents, community and youth coali- tions to strengthen and build the schools that Sanger Unified students deserve,”said Filippi when it was first announced that Jones would replace Navo.
“Sanger Unified School District has been myhomesince1987andIamsoexcitedto become the next superintendent of a district I am incredibly proud of,” said Jones. “My early experience as a classroom teacher left a lasting impression on me that I still carry today- that nothing matters more than pro- viding our students with the best educational opportunities. Every parent wants only the best for their children and I want only the best for all the children of Sanger Unified. Our culture is all about our future and our students and I am eager to get to work.”
It's no longer just about fire drills
The usually light-hearted mood of the board turned serious as Ryan Kilby, director of support services, reviewed district and classroom emergency procedures for such things as medical emergencies, an assault, weapon on school grounds, lockdown, evacua- tion and an active shooter on campus.
The "Classroom Emergency Procedures Guide," handed out by Kilby sets out the fol- lowing protocol for "Coping With An Active Shooter":
• Be aware of your environment and any possible dangers.
• Take note of the two nearest exits in any facility you visit.
• If you are in an office or class room, stay there and secure the door.
• Attempt to take the active shooter down as a last resort.
INITIATE EMERGENCY RADIO BROAD- CAST or CALL 911 WHEN IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.
How To Respond When An Active Shooter Is In Your Vicinity:
Dick Sheppard/Sanger Herald
Ryan Kilby reviewed district safety protocols and procedures at the Feb. 27 school board meeting.
1. EVACUATE
Have an escape route and plan in mind. Leave your belongings behind.
Keep your hands visible.
2.HIDEOUT
Hide in an area out of the shooters view. Block entry to your hiding place and lock
the doors.
Silence your cell phone, radio or pager.
3. TAKE ACTION
As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger.
Attempt to incapacitate the shooter.
Act with physical aggression and throw items at the active shooter.
Profile Of An Active Shooter:
An active shooter is an individual engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a con- fined and populated area, typically through the use of firearms.
Characteristics Of An Active Shooter Situ- ation:
Victims are selected at random.
The event is unpredictable and evolves quickly.
Law enforcement is usually required to end an active shooter situation.
When law Enforcement Arrives
Remain calm and follow instructions.

Raise hands and spread fingers.
Keep hands visible at all times.
Avoid quick movements toward officers
such as holding on to them for safety. Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling. Do not stop to ask officers for help or
direction when evacuating.
