Reedley 11-year-old All-Star team falls in Section 7 championship

The Reedley Little League 11-year-old All-Star teams sea- son ended on July 14 in the Section 7 Tournament.
Reedley lost to the Porter- ville All-Star team 8-3 in the championship game of the Section 7 tournament.
No statistics were avail- able for the championship game at presstime.
Lupe Rodriguez, coach of the All-Star team, was proud of how his team played de- spite the loss.
“This team gets along real- ly well and I think that helped lead us in making this run,” Rodriguez said. “I think the week layoff hurt us, but we just have to work harder and be ready for next year. These player have it in them to make a deep run to the state tourna- ment next year.”
On July 14, Reedley raced outtoa1-0inthetopofthe first inning.
Porterville answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game.
The 11's scored two runs in the top of the second inning
to take a 3-1 lead. Porterville answered with four runs in the bottom of the second in- ning to take a 5-3 lead.
Porterville scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The 11's defeated Por- terville 14-4 on July 12 in the semifinals of the Section 7 tournament.
Roman Ocejo, Cole Be- tancourt, Gage Betancourt and Nate Tamez each had two RBIs, while Elijah Garay, Roger Torres, Mason Cisneros and Nicholas Ochoa each had one.
After falling behind 2-1 af- ter one inning of play, Reed- ley scored eight runs in the bottom of the third innings to take a 9-2 lead en route to a victory.
Reedley then lost to Por- terville 6-2 on July 13 which forced a deciding game on Ju- ly 14 for the Section 7 Cham- pionship.
In the 6-2 loss on July 13, Ortiz and Ocejo each had one RBI for Reedley.

Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame inductees

Reedley College will in- duct five new names into the Tigers Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 4 at Reedley College.
Amanda Fossen-Burton, Jack Edwards, Marie Byrd- Harris, Heather
Goodman-Morris and Brian Tessler will be honored during the banquet in the col- lege cafeteria.

Amanda Fossen-Burton (Track and Filed, 1998–2000)
Burton was a three-time State Championship medal- ist. She was MVP in the field events at the Central Valley Conference Championships at Ratcliffe Stadium as a fresh- man. Burotn competed in five
events at the Northern Cali- fornia Finals – the 100 and 200 meters, high jump, long jump and triple jump.
She finished seventh in
the heptathlon at the state meet, earning the first of her three state medals. She also finished second in the long jump and high jump at the Fresno Relays in 2000.
She also had personal bests in the 100 and 200 and finished second in the high jump and the 200 at the CVC Championships.
Burton qualified as the top seed in the high jump at the Nor Cal Finals, winning that event.
She also finished fourth in the triple jump, sixth in the heptathlon (3781 total points) and fifth in the high jump at the state finals, earning med- als in both events.
Burton was named Reed- ley College’s Female Tiger Athlete of the Year in 2000.

Tigers volleyball schedule

Reedley College has re- leased the schedule for the 2018 women's volleyball season.
The Tigers will look to im- prove from its 2017 season where they ended with a 12-12 overall record and finished in fifth place in the Central Valley Conference with a 9-7 record.
The Tigers will open their season on Wednesday, Sept. 5, against De Anza College in Cupertino.
They then will compete in the San Joaquin Delta Tourna- ment Sept. 7 and 8 in Stockton.
Reedley College will open Central Valley Conference play on Sept. 12, against Taft College in Reedley.
They then will play back- to-back road game against Cerro Coso College on Sept. 14 in Ridgecrest and Columbia College on Sept. 19 in Sonora.
The Tigers then will play four straight home games be- ginning on Sept. 21 against Por- terville College.
They will play Fresno City College on Sept. 26, before play- ing College of the Sequoias on Sept. 28.

The Reedley Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Star teams postseason run ended on July 8 with a 9-6 loss to Santa Ma- ria in the Central California State Tournament.
Earning a spot in the Cen- tral California State Tourna- ment was a dream for Reed- ley, which lost to Madera and Santa Maria to finish 2-2 in the July 6-9 event held in Madera.
“The boys have always worked hard for me and my coaching staff. They performed well at the district tournament and held their own at state,” said Sergio Marquez, the team manager. “They have shown growth in every year since be- coming their coach. I’m excited to see what’s in store for us next year.”
The 14's finished in second place in the District 3 tourna- ment to earn a spot in the state tournament.
They went 5-4 overall in their run to the state tourna- ment.
