James Rodney Walton
September 26, 1928 – September 26, 2020
James Walton, a lifelong resident of Fresno County, passed away on his birthday, September 26th. Born
in 1928 in Sanger, California, Jim
was the fourth child of Helen
and Estey Walton. He attend-
ed grammar school in Sanger
and graduated from Sanger
High School in 1946. Follow-
ing his graduation, he attended
the University of California at
Berkeley where he joined the
Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He
graduated from CAL in 1950
with a degree in Economics and
was accepted into law school at Boalt
Hall, now named UC Berkeley Law. He
attended law school for three semesters and then enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean War. In February of 1952, Jim received orders to report to Naval Officer Training in Newport, Rhode Island. He was then assigned to active duty aboard the USS Chara, an ammunition supply ship sta- tioned at Sasebo, Japan which became his home for the next three years. Jim started as Communications Officer and rose to Operations Officer reaching the rank of Lieutenant. Jim was discharged from the Navy in July of 1955.
Jim and his future wife, Muriel Papac, knew each other growing up in Sanger and were family friends. Their rela- tionship grew and they were married at St. John’s Cathedral on August 6, 1955. Jim and Muriel returned to Berkeley where he completed law school and was admitted to the California Bar in December of 1957. They then moved back to the valley and established their home in Fresno, where Jim got his first job as Deputy District Attorney. They had four children, Anne, Mary Kay, Nancy and Brian, between 1957 and 1963. In 1962 the family moved to Sanger where Jim took the position of Judge of the Sanger Justice Court and established a private law practice, Aye & Walton later becoming Walton & Mitchell. He was recognized for dis- tinguished service from 1962-1970 by the Sanger Judicial District Court. Jim continued to practice law into his 80’s. Not only was he an attorney and a trusted advisor to many people, but also a good friend. He will always be remem- bered for his honesty, his generosity and his wisdom.
Jim was extremely civic minded and held leadership po- sitions in many local organizations. He served as Director of the Sanger Chamber of Commerce and served as Presi- dent of the Sanger Kiwanis Club. In 1993 he was named Citizen of the Year by the Rotary Club. He was Chairman of the Fresno County Civil Service Commission. Jim was passionate about preserving the history of the community of Sanger. He was instrumental in the development of the Sanger Depot Museum and President of the Sanger Histori- cal Society for over 35 years. Jim served countless people in many ways during his lifetime. He set up a program to help reintroduce men to society after having served their time. He believed that there is good in all and provided opportunity when others would not. Later in life Jim continued to enjoy volunteering at various organizations including the Sanger Depot Museum and the Nazareth House of Fresno.
A devoted father and grandfather, Jim loved his family. He took great pleasure in making every holiday special for his children when they were growing up. He shared wonder- ful summers with extended family at Bass Lake where he spent most evenings at the barbecue or leading the family sing-a-long. The Walton family could often be found on the tennis court. Jim and Muriel hosted many tennis tourna- ments for family and friends at their home outside of Sanger. Jim was a fun-loving grandfather “Papa”, who spoiled his 14 grandchildren with family vacations at Lake Tahoe, do- nuts, fun outings, and twenty-dollar bills. He never missed a baptism or graduation or any other event honoring one of his grandchildren. Uncle Jim was much loved by his 24 nieces and nephews who have shared great memories of times spent with him. He was an avid fan of the San Fran- cisco Giants and the CAL Bears and loved good music and a good tennis game throughout his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel, his parents Estey and Helen Walton, and his siblings John and Robert Walton and Catherine Kelley. Jim is survived by his daugh- ter and son-in-law, Anne and Dennis Hance of Los Ange- les, California; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kay and Eric Down of Portola Valley, California; his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jeff Closs of Menlo Park, California; and his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Laura Walton of Charlotte, North Carolina. Additionally, he has fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who loved their “Papa” dearly.
The family is planning a celebration of his life in September 2021. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Sanger Historical Society, P.O. Box 44, Sanger, CA 93657 or the Nazareth House of Fresno, 2121 N. First Street, Fresno, CA 93703.
