Matty Hedgehog and the Paper Chase
The three animals scrambled through the tall grass, with Jackson constantly looking ahead to see if he could spot Matty or Paris. The mill was in sight, and they had already gathered handfuls of paper.
‘The paper has run out. I can’t see anymore,’ cried Isla.
Jackson moved forward. ‘I can’t see any either. Where have they gone?’ He shouted: ‘Paris! Matty! Can you hear me?’
Not a sound came back. Jackson walked up to the mill and shouted again: ‘If you don’t show yourselves right this minute, we are going home.’
After waiting a few moments, Jackson muttered: ‘I wonder if Matty is playing a trick on us and has doubled back.’
The animals turned and walked back expecting to find Matty and Paris giggling together by the garden gate. There wasn’t a sign of them. Isla and Archie swished through the grass to see if they could find the trail. ‘Look Jackson! I’ve found more paper,’ shouted Isla excitedly. ‘Come on, we have to go the other way!’
The two young animals ran off. ‘Wait for me,’ called Jackson. He set off after them when a faint noise made him skid to a stop and listen. It was a scream.
‘There’s something wrong. Why have they come this far?’ he called. ‘Wait – I heard a scream!’
‘Is it them?’ asked Archie.
‘I don’t know. Listen – I want you both to stay here. If you hear me shout, run and get help.’
